The new movie Ready Player One is based on the novel of the same name, by Ernest Cline. Interestingly, a lot of Steven Spielberg’s ’80s projects were referenced in the book. So when Spielberg himself became the film’s director, he had some tough choices to make — does he leave the references in, at the risk of appearing self-serving? Does he take them out? Or does he defer to another director? Ultimately, Spielberg said he did what he thought was best for the movie, though bowing out was not an option because he was so excited to make the movie.
