Bomb squad detonates WWI-era grenade in Los Altos backyard

LOS ALTOS – Authorities on Monday detonated a World War I-era hand grenade in the backyard of a Los Altos home.

A resident of a home on the 1700 block of Christina Drive called officers at 10:15 a.m. after finding a “suspected grenade” in an elderly relative’s bedroom, the Los Altos Police Department said in a news release.

Officers requested assistance from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad, which “determined the device was a World War I vintage grenade that was potentially live,” police said.

Four adjacent homes were evacuated and other nearby residents were asked to shelter in place.

“Out of an abundance of caution, personnel elected to detonate the device in the rear yard of the property,” police said, adding that “the detonation was completed without incident.”

Residents in the surrounding area were warned in advance of the detonation, police said.
