Bubba Wallace cracked himself up after narrowly missing a wreck at Pocono

Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. had a ridiculously close call Sunday at Pocono Raceway and almost found himself in the wall as collateral damage in someone else’s wreck. Almost.

Just after the halfway point in the 170-lap Pocono 350 — the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series’ two-day doubleheader weekend — Ryan Preece in the No. 37 Chevrolet was wrecking on the 2.5-mile track known as the “Tricky Triangle,” and he nearly T-boned the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports driver.

As Preece’s car slid down the track toward the inside wall, Wallace with an impressive move just barely snuck below him through the quickly shrinking gap between the No. 37 car and the barrier. But Preece hit the wall, left front tire first, while Wallace’s car appeared largely (or maybe totally) unscathed.

As FOX Sports’ Jeff Gordon noted on the broadcast, Wallace’s rear tires briefly left the ground. But the best part of this, however, was the 26-year-old driver’s hilarious reaction on his team’s radio, which is included at the end of FOX Sports’ replay of this moment:

That was great. @BubbaWallace just went full Days of Thunder at Pocono. pic.twitter.com/miuJOz6EMs

Really, what else can you do but laugh and be impressed with yourself?

Here’s part of Wallace’s exchange with spotter Freddie Kraft over the team’s radio, via The Athletic‘s Jordan Bianchi:

“Wait until you see the replay,” Wallace’s spotter

“Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha,” –Wallace

“It really wasn’t close, it was like a foot-and-a-half.” –Wallace spotter

“Let’s see you do it.” –Bubba Wallace

Well, he’s got a point.

Protest music has come "roaring back to life" when we need it most

In the NASCAR Cup Series first race of the weekend at Pocono on Saturday, Wallace finished 22nd.
