California phlebotomist accused of sexually assaulting women while drawing blood

A phlebotomist working in Aliso Viejo was arrested this week on suspicion of sexually assaulting women while they were giving blood, authorities said.

Jose Farias, 29, of San Juan Capistrano was taken into custody Wednesday, Sept. 21, for suspected battery while employed at a medical laboratory in Aliso Viejo, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The name of the lab was not provided.

Farias was cited and released.

On Aug. 29, an 18-year-old woman reported she was assaulted in a sexual manner by Farias while giving blood at the laboratory. On Sept. 20, a 30-year-old woman filed a similar report of assault while having her blood drawn. No further details were available.

Farias’ access to patients led investigators to believe there may be additional victims.
