California recall election results: Yes/No vote and candidates vying to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom

Polls in the 2021 California recall election close at 8 p.m., and shortly afterward election officials will begin releasing results in a contest that will decide whether Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will keep his job.

If more than 50% of voters elect to recall Newsom, California’s next governor will be decided by the second question on the ballot, which lists 46 candidates who want to replace him. One, Doug Ose, suffered a heart attack and recently dropped out of the race.

Registered voters have been casting ballots by mail for weeks, and many counties have been processing those ballots.

While the state will be able to announce initial results shortly after the polls close Tuesday, the final count could take up to a month. News organizations that call elections, like the Associated Press, may be able to announce a winner in as little as a few hours, but if the vote count is close it can take days or weeks.
