Deconstructing the Tampa Bay Lightning’s weird, post-loss break-up tweet

The Tampa Bay Lightning had an all-time sports collapse in the Stanley Cup Playoffs Tuesday night, getting swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round after having one of the best NHL regular seasons ever on record.

Expectations were high for this group of players, but, sadly for them and fans, they failed to meet them. After their 7-3 loss on Tuesday night, the team tried to take responsibility for their failure (and it can only be described as an epic failure) with a sincere, mea culpa tweet.

It’s hard to have to words after a loss of such historic proportions, and, as these things go, it wasn’t bad, but it was also just… odd? Many people, rightfully so, thought it sounded like a really well-worded break-up tweet.

Let’s break it down line by line.

This is a classic break-up line, probably second only to, it’s not you, it’s me.

We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it.

The most underrated emotion to get right in a breakup is empathy. These words don’t sound like they’re coming out of a hockey team, but rather someone who messed up bad and is now just trying to make it about your feelings instead of their actions.

This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.

The dumpee finally realizing they are getting dumped, but still trying to walk away with some sense of dignity, even though they’re basically being hurled into the ether.

Unfortunately, what the tweet doesn’t admit to is just how badly the Lightning messed up. There’s actually no accountability for their disastrous play, just a lot of emotional whitewashing that left room for fans to roast them. As for as hockey tweets go, it’s not great, but hey, if you ever need to send a casual paramore on his or her way, this script should do nicely.
