Johnny Manziel’s comeback to professional football hasn’t exactly gone as planned. The former Heisman Trophy winner last played in the NFL in 2015, was effectively banned from the CFL after a brief stint with Hamilton and Montreal and lasted two weeks in the AAF before the league shuttered.
Manziel is 26 years old, and outside of the revived XFL, his football options are limited. But he has found a way to stay busy these days.
He’s now an ad spokesperson for Direct Auto Insurance’s latest commercial campaign. The company recently released a 30-second ad that had Manziel discussing the uncertainty of not having a paycheck and tying that to one of Direct’s services.
According to Cleveland.com, Manziel was included in the company’s “Get Direct and Get Going” campaign along with Tonya Harding and Fat Joe.
“In choosing celebrities, we wanted to hone in on people who share the same everyday issues our audience faces. Sure, they’ve risen to great heights in their careers and lives, but, at the end of the day, they’re just like everyone else,” said Nick Sonderup, Executive Creative Director at Pereira O’Dell, the agency behind the campaign, in a press release. “Direct Auto Insurance believes in giving them, and you, a second chance. We wanted to develop creative that celebrates that idea in a fun yet poignant way.”
Direct also dropped a “Mean Tweets” video featuring the ex-Browns quarterback.
