The man is suspected of shooting his 49-year-old wife about 7 a.m. at their home in the 4700 block of Ash Avenue, Hammond police said.

A Hammond man is in critical condition after allegedly killing his wife and then shooting himself at a cemetery in the northwest Indiana town.

The man is suspected of shooting his 49-year-old wife about 7 a.m. at their home in the 4700 block of Ash Avenue, Hammond police said.

Officers arriving to the home found the woman with a gunshot wound to her shoulder, police said. She was taken to a hospital in Chicago, where she died.

About an hour later, officers received a call that her husband, a 47-year-old man, shot himself in the head at a cemetery in the 6900 block of Southeastern Avenue, police said.

He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

Further information was not immediately available, and neither person’s name has been publicly released.
