
OAKLAND — A man walking on Interstate 880 in East Oakland late Tuesday night was killed when he was struck by a vehicle, authorities said.
The man’s name has not yet been released.
The fatality happened about 11:12 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of I-880 south of Hegenberger Road.
The California Highway Patrol said the man was walking on the freeway when a vehicle hit him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet said why they believe the man was on the freeway.
The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries but it was not immediately known if they were hospitalized.
The CHP said the driver was cooperating with investigators. There is no indication the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the CHP said.
Three of the five freeway lanes were closed for more than two hours during the investigation.
