Minnesota stuns college football world with strong first-half vs. Penn State

Penn State was a slim 6.5-point favorite on the road against Minnesota, as both teams entered Saturday’s Big Ten matchup with perfect 8-0 records. The Nittany Lions’ defense also went to Minneapolis giving up an average of only 9.6 points per game, which was second in the country to Ohio State.

And then the Golden Gophers put up 24 points in the first half — more than any other opponent had scored against Penn State in four quarters this season.

Minnesota is 8-0 for the first time since 1941, but everyone underestimated them — from us to the College Football Playoff committee — in large part because of its schedule so far. Its most recent games were against Maryland, Rutgers, Nebraska and Illinois, and all ended in lopsided scores. That’s awesome for the Golden Gophers, but it didn’t seem like their top-50 offense would be prepared to cut through Penn State’s top-10 defense.

Clearly, everyone was wrong.

The Nittany Lions had allowed only three first-quarter points all season, and Minnesota put up 14. Golden Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan threw 10-for-12 for 240 yards and three touchdowns in the first half while the team had three different players on the receiving end of each touchdown: Rashod Bateman, Tyler Johnson and Chris Autman-Bell.

P.J. Fleck’s team went into halftime with a 24-13 lead, and with 240 passing yards alone and no turnovers, plus two interceptions against Penn State, Minnesota has to be feeling confident about this game so far.
